Hockey
Introduction
Hockey at Auckland Grammar School holds its own within the myriad of Winter Sports that are on offer. We continually produce winning teams at all grades and Auckland Representative players at all age groups. The school has been fortunate to have had several New Zealand Representatives including recent players Ryan Archibald ’93, Shay Neal ’04 and Dwayne Rowsell ’05.
With expectations of a competitive nature, there is also the element of enjoyment with social teams as well as serious teams entered into the mid-week competition. The School currently has seven Hockey teams in the local Auckland competition with all grades playing on a Monday or Wednesday.
When he was younger, 2022 captain of the 1st XI Hockey team Max Ready played both Hockey and Rugby, so trying to navigate playing on the field to then playing on the turf was quite a challenge! Sponsorship
Hockey is fortunate to have been assisted by several companies to help lessen the financial burden that is ever increasing on players and their families. Without these companies the school would not be able to provide the facilities or the opportunities that currently exist.
These companies include Canon (the principle sponsor of Hockey at Auckland Grammar), Grammar Electrical and Functional Physio (associate sponsors of the 1st XI) and Shoe Science, along with Just Hockey. We appreciate all the support that we receive and always welcome new contributions.
General Information
Terms played: Term 2 and 3
Game days:
- Under 15 grades – Monday nights
- Open grades – Wednesday nights
Practice times: Where possible, 3.30pm-5pm once a week at the School turf. This varies for Premier teams
Costs: $120 for the 1st XI, 2nd XI and Under 15A / $100 for all other teams. This includes registration fee for entry and turf costs. There will be extra costs for players if they play at tournaments or in Traditional fixtures
Uniform: All teams play in navy winter sports tops, navy shorts, navy socks with gold tops. 1st XI, 2nd XI and Under 15 will be provided with shirts
Equipment: Players need to provide their own personal equipment (stick, shin pads, mouth guards) and goal keeping sets can be provided by the School if needed
Other information: Most games are played at Auckland Grammar School although teams will usually have 3-4 games away. Assistance with transport may be needed for these fixtures
