Cycling

Introduction

The Auckland Grammar School Cycling squad, or the Grammar Hammer as they are known, are one of the most successful cycling squads in New Zealand. In 2015 the squad were National Champions – a title they have held 21 times in the event’s short history.

Riders both past and present represent New Zealand and some have National, Commonwealth and Olympic success. Aside from success, many riders enjoy participating in the squad for social and fitness purposes, and every rider in the Grammar Hammer is a valued member. We pride ourselves on a strong team culture.

The squad contest many events throughout the season, some of these events being the Auckland Schools Team Time Trial series, the North Island Schools Road Championships, Northern Tour and National Schools Road Championships.

The 2023 Cycling Parents Information Evening will be held in the Old Boys’ Pavilion on Wednesday 15 February. More information will be available early in Term 1.

Training

A new riders programme – Learn to Ride – runs in Term 1 to help those new to the sport get up to speed before School training begins at the start of Term 2.

We encourage all new riders to attend this weekly session as valuable information is shared, such as how to ride in a bunch, how to change a flat tyre, how to manage road traffic, how to look after your bike and much more. Current riders from the squad kindly offer their help, guidance and experience on these rides too. The Master in Charge and/or School staff are always present for these rides.

Professional coaches run School training rides in Terms 2 and 3. The squad is split into Juniors and Seniors and ride on certain days of the week. Riders who are wanting and willing to become the best will also train outside of these times.

Get in touch

If you are thinking of joining the Grammar Hammer, come out for a ride with us to see what you think. The squad are a good bunch of young men who you will get to know as you spend hours in the saddle training together. Any questions or queries should be directed to the Master in Charge.
