Badminton

Introduction

Badminton at Auckland Grammar School is very strong. Last year, Grammar won three of the five groups we entered in the Auckland Secondary Schools Competition. We have made the final three in all but one of the New Zealand Secondary Schools Badminton Championships in the last 15 years.

The School currently has 18 teams playing in a summer league competition organised by Auckland Badminton. This is primarily for social players but also for those who want to prepare for the school competition starting in term two.

In this competition, the School is restricted to 12 teams due to the limited availability of courts. These teams play after school at the Badminton Hall (99 Gillies Avenue, Epsom).

2022 Captain of Badminton Bruce Guo has been playing since he was eight,. He admits he wasn’t the best player but he joined a holiday programme and he has been playing ever since. Bruce spoke to Headmaster’s Heritage Committee member David Wilson about how the team work well together, which has seen them receive Silver at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Championships during Winter Tournament Week – watch the full interview below.
