Badminton
Introduction
Badminton at Auckland Grammar School is very popular and students have the opportunity to play socially in Term 1 or competitively in Terms 2 and 3 as part of the Auckland Secondary Schools Competition.
Nationally, we have made it to the top three teams in the New Zealand Secondary Schools Championships for the last 15 years.
Registrations for Badminton are done online each term and registration dates and any other relevant information are provided in the notices during Assembly.
Teams for social and competitive badminton are selected at random from students who have registered in order to ensure that student expand their social circles and meet new people. The Premier and A Reserve teams are selected through trials that are held at the end of Term 1.
Teams play all matches after school from 3.30 p.m. at the Badminton Hall (99 Gillies Avenue, Epsom). Students are expected to find their own way to the Badminton Hall and most students walk there after school.
2022 Captain of Badminton Bruce Guo has been playing since he was eight,. He admits he wasn’t the best player but he joined a holiday programme and he has been playing ever since. Bruce spoke to Headmaster’s Heritage Committee member David Wilson about how the team work well together, which has seen them receive Silver at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Championships during Winter Tournament Week – watch the full interview below.
