Oboe

Possibly the sweetest and most harmonious of all the woodwind instruments, the oboe plays a vital melodic role in the Symphony Orchestra, the Premier Concert Band and the Wind Band.

Instrument hire can be arranged through the Music department, subject to availability – please contact J. Mackenzie in the Music department for further information.

The oboe is taught by Alison Jepsonclick here to enrol for lessons.

Old Boy Thomas Hutchinson ’06 (pictured below) went on to study oboe at the Paris Conservatoire, has played with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and has proven himself to be one of the finest young oboists in the world.

Thomas performed at the 66th annual ARD International Music Competition in Munich, described by the New Zealand Double Reed Society as “the musical equivalent of winning an Olympic gold medal, with pre-selection and four very challenging rounds, each with a different programme of music. Watch Thomas’s semi-final performance here.
