Report: success at recent Squash competitions

The Premier Squash Team competed in the Auckland Secondary Schools Team Championships at the end of Term 2, which is a greater Auckland regional competition.

The Premier Team was in the top boys’ division. On day one of the competition, the team played Lynfield College, Macleans College and Mount Albert Grammar School in general pool play. The Premier team won all three ties, with a combined total of 15 individual matches of which they won 14.

Captain of Squash N. Z. Thomas produced an exemplary performance to beat the Mount Albert Grammar School no. 1 seeded player 3 -0 in a fine display of squash.

The team played Westlake Boys’ High School in the semi-final winning 5-0 before enduring a competitive final against Takapuna Grammar School. The closeness of the fixture was reflected in the score being tied 2-2 after the individual matches. Form 6 student F. L. Goodson played the last match and produced a commanding performance to win 3-0 and thus secure the win and retain the trophy.

While there is still plenty of hard training to come, the team can take great confidence in this result.

The team crossed stage on Wednesday 19 July to receive their medals, the Peter Williams Shield, and the School’s congratulations.

The Premier Squash team then achieved considerable success in the final of the regular Auckland Secondary Schools Squash competition, where they played against Lynfield College.

Lynfield were newly promoted to the Premier grade this year, and it is a great credit to their players that their team secured a place in the final.

Having played them in general pool play at the Team Championships the week prior, the Premier team knew what to expect from Lynfield College, which allowed them to dictate the play and work their opponents around the court forcing errors.

The team lost one match of the four and won the remaining three resulting in a 11-3 win to secure consecutive Auckland Secondary School Squash Championships.

Congratulations to the Premier team – C. A. Dunwoodie, E. V. Flynn, F. L. Goodson, A. J. Huddart, J. M. Jones, A. H. Manivannan, A. C. Parker and Captain N. Z. Thomas.
