Report: Final match of the 1st XI Hockey SuperCity Competition

On Wednesday 16 August, the 1st XI Hockey team played their 14th and final league match of the SuperCity Competition at home against King’s College, the 150th fixture between the two teams.

The 1st XI Hockey team started the match on a positive note playing an exciting brand of Hockey which allowed the team to control territory and possession. Grammar opened the scoring midway through the first quarter with a field goal by Form 5 student R. A. Patel.

The second quarter saw the team continue to control the flow of the game through a structured and well executed defensive structure which created space for Grammar to attack into. A courageous deflection by Form 6 student H. J. Waldegrave in the final minute before the half time whistle saw Grammar doubling the lead.

The third quarter allowed both teams an opportunity to test each other’s defensive structure, but Grammar remained resolute in defence and the score remained 3-0 to Grammar heading into the final quarter.

The final quarter allowed Grammar the opportunity to dictate the flow and direction of the game which allowed Grammar the space to put Kings on the back foot with some clinical hockey which saw goals scored by R. Patel and Form 7 students E. M. R. O’Carroll and W. A. Wedde.

A 5-0 victory in a very special fixture for both schools now puts Grammar at the top of the SuperCity competition. The 1st XI Hockey team would like to thank all the spectators along with the support of the August Army for coming out to support the team, who now prepare for the final of the SuperCity competition before the Rankin Cup during Winter Tournament Week.
