Report: A full wrap-up from Winter Tournament Week

Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 August

  • The Under 15 Basketball team topped their pool in the Northern Regional Championships to progress to the quarter-finals. If the team win their quarter-final, they will play in the semi-finals
  • The Premier Fencing team won gold in the Sabre team event at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Fencing Championships

On Monday 28 August, the following teams started their campaigns:

  • The 1st XI Hockey team competing for the Rankin Cup in Wellington
  • The 1st XI Football team competing at the National Tournament in Christchurch
  • The Under 15 Rugby team competing in the National Invitational Tournament in Hamilton
  • The Premier Table Tennis team competing at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Championships in Hamilton
  • The Premier Badminton team competing at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Championships in Porirua

Results from Monday 28 August

  • The Under 15 Basketball team won their quarter-final Monday morning to set up a semi-final against Westlake Boys’ High School. The team played superbly in the semi-final to win 103-74 to set up a final against local rivals St Peter’s College on Tuesday
  • The Premier Table Tennis team began their National Title defence with three convincing 7-0 victories over Tauranga Boys’ College, Palmerston North Boys’ High School, and Burnside High School. These victories mean the Premier Team move directly into the semi-finals today, playing Maclean’s College this morning
  • The Premier Badminton team started their National Tournament with an important win over Westlake Boys’ High School, winning on countback after drawing 3-3. They then went on to beat Burnside High School in convincing fashion 6-0
  • The Under 15 Rugby team began the Invitational National tournament with two emphatic wins over Palmerston North Boys’ High School (29-17) and Mount Albert Grammar School (36-5)
  • The 1st XI Hockey team began their Rankin Cup campaign strongly with two wins from two games in pool play – 6-2 against Lindisfarne College and 7-0 over Whanganui Collegiate School
  • The 1st XI Football team lost their first pool game against Cashmere High School 3-1. This was followed up with a 1-all draw against Palmerston North Boys High School

Results from Tuesday 29 August

  • The Under 15 Basketball team won the Northern Regional Championships with a dominant display in the final to beat St Peter’s College 119-62. Tomorrow, the Premier Basketball team begins their National Qualifying Tournament
  • The Premier Table Tennis team won their semi-final over Macleans College 7-0 to set up a final against Westlake Boys’ High School, a rematch of the 2022 final. The final was incredibly tense, but the Grammar team were eventually crowned National Champions with a 4-2 win
  • The Premier Badminton team beat Scot’s College 6-0 and followed this up with a 5-1 victory over Kristin School to remain unbeaten in the competition to date. Tomorrow they play St Patrick’s College in their final pool match before crossovers begin on Wednesday
  • The U15 Rugby team played their final pool match against St Bede’s College, winning 14-10 to top their pool. The team play Rotorua Boys’ High School in the quarter-finals on Wednesday
  • The 1st XI Hockey team played against Wellington College in their final pool game, winning 4-2 to top their group and give themselves a favourable round of 16 fixture against Wairarapa College on Wednesday
  • The 1st XI Football team beat St Patrick’s College (Silverstream) 1-0 in their final pool game to go through to the round of 16. The team played St Kentigern’s College in the Round of 16 on Tuesday afternoon, narrowly losing 1-nil. Tomorrow the team plays Lindisfarne College in a 9-16 quarterfinal playoff

Results from Wednesday 30 August

  • The Premier Basketball team played their first two pool games of the Northern Region National Qualifying Tournament, winning 93-38 over Long Bay College and 106-54 against Elim Christian College.
  • In the individual events of the New Zealand Secondary Schools Table Tennis Championships, top ranked player J. H. T. Choi won the Under 19 individual title without dropping a set, while in the Under 15 Boys’ event, Grammar finished 1st and 2nd, with Form 5 student P. Jajal beating Form 3 student H. X. Jiang in a tense four-set final. These results rounded out an exceptional campaign by the Premier Table Tennis team, who came away with three national titles from the three events they took part in
  • The Premier Badminton team beat St Patrick’s College 5-1 in their final pool match to set up an afternoon semi-final against Maclean’s College. It was an extremely close match, ending in a 3-3 tie, but Grammar went on to win on a countback of total sets won
  • The Under 15 Rugby team played Rotorua Boys’ High School in the quarter-finals on Wednesday. This was a hard-fought game but unfortunately Rotorua came out on top 19-10.
  • The 1st XI Hockey team played their round of 16 fixture against Wairarapa College on Wednesday. They controlled the match well to win 3-1 and book themselves a place in the Top 8 of the competition
  • The 1st XI Football team played Lindisfarne College in a playoff for ninth to 16th place. The team started strongly and carried their momentum throughout the game to win 6-0

Results from Thursday 31 August

  • The Premier Basketball team won their next two pool games against Mount Roskill Grammar School (75-66) and Orewa High School (114-57)
  • On Wednesday, the Premier Badminton team played defending champions Westlake Boys’ High School in the national final. The team played superbly to win 5-1 and claim the National Title for the first time since 2015
  • The Under 15 Rugby team played hosts Hamilton Boys’ High School in the fifth to eighth semi-final, going down 31-17 in a physical encounter
  • The 1st XI Hockey team played St Kentigern’s College in the quarter-finals, putting together a composed performance to win 2-0
  • In their penultimate game of the National Tournament, the 1st XI Football team played Shirley Boys’ High School in the ninth to 16th semi-finals, weathering an early spell of pressure to come away 1-0 winners thanks to a late goal to Form 7 student J. P. Dew

Results from Friday 1 September

  • The Premier Basketball team won their final pool game against Westlake Boys’ High School 78-65 to finish top of their group and set up a favourable quarter-final against Pukekohe High School, which they won 83-57 to guarantee qualification for Nationals in October
  • In their final game of the National Invitational Tournament, the Under 15 Rugby team played off for seventh and eighth place against Palmerston North Boy’s High School, putting together a great performance to win 34-10 and finish their tournament on a high
  • The 1st XI Hockey team played tournament favourites Timaru Boys’ High School in the Rankin Cup semi-finals. Despite Timaru leading for most of the match, the game was extremely close and Grammar closed to within one goal in the third quarter. Grammar threw caution to the wind in the final quarter in searching for an equaliser, however this allowed Timaru to extend their lead to eventually win 5-1
  • On the final day of the National Tournament, the 1st XI Football team played Sacred Heart College for ninth and 10th place. The team played well but conceded a late penalty to lose 1-0 and finish 10th in New Zealand, a result they can be extremely proud of

Results from Saturday 2 September

  • The Premier Basketball team played Mount Albert Grammar School in the semi-finals of the National Qualifying Tournament on Saturday, narrowly missing out on a spot in the final by two points, going down 66-68. The team bounced back strongly Saturday night to beat Dilworth School 87-59 to claim third place
  • In their final match of the season, the 1st XI Hockey team played Christchurch Boys’ High School for the Rankin Cup bronze medal. The match was extremely close throughout, with Grammar only holding a 3-2 lead at the end of the third quarter. In the final quarter, the 1st XI held their nerve and converted a penalty corner in the 51st minute to extend their lead to 4-2, which they held until the end of the game to claim third place in the 2023 Rankin Cup
  • The Cycling team began the Northern Tour, their final major event before nationals in October. Day 1 saw the Hill Climb event take place on Mount Wellington. Form 5 student C. P. Wagener won Silver in the Under 17 event and Form 6 student B. C. Pawson won Bronze in the Under 20 event, amid a number of other top ten placings for Grammar riders
  • Day 1 of the National Secondary School Weightlifting Championships saw Grammar lifters compete in the 61kg, 81kg, and 89kg divisions, which were further separated into U15 and open age classification. In the Under 15 age categories, Form 3 student F. T. M. Duncan won Bronze in the 61kg class, while Form 4 students D. E. Boyd and H. P. Acteson both won Gold in the 81kg and 89kg classes respectively. Acteson’s lifts also placed him second in the Open age category
  • Captain of Weightlifting A. D. M. Duncan snatched a personal best 81kg to go with a 100kg clean and jerk to take Bronze in the 81kg class.

Results from Sunday 3 September

  • Day 2 of the National Secondary School Weightlifting Championships saw Grammar lifters compete in the 96kg and 102kg divisions. Form 6 student J. Kim won Silver in the 96kg class, an outstanding effort in his first competition
  • Form 7 student A. D. Lipscombe snatched 100kg on his way to a 210kg total, for which he was awarded Bronze in the 102kg class
  • In the overall schools category, Grammar finished second nationally behind Dilworth School
  • Members of the Cycling team competed in the Northern Tour Criterium. Form 4 student G. G. Pollard and Form 5 student S. R. R. R. Perera won Gold in the Under 15 and Under 16 divisions respectively. Form 4 student E. D. Corbett won Silver in the Under 16 division, and Form 5 students C. P. Wagener and R. Y. Turnbull made it a Grammar 2-3 by winning Silver and Bronze in the Under 17 event.
  • These results saw Grammar riders make the podium in the general classification standings, with Form 5 student D. Kwon receiving Bronze in the Under 16 category and C. P. Wagener and R. Y. Turnbull receiving second and third overall in the Under 17 category
