Report: 1st XI Hockey team vs King’s College for the Birchell Shield

The 1st XI Hockey team played their seventh match of the Super City Competition away at King’s College on Wednesday 14 June. This was the 149th fixture between the two teams and this fixture was for the Birchall Shield.

The 1st XI team started the match on a positive note playing an exciting brand of Hockey, but unfortunately could not break the 0-0 deadlock at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter saw Grammar continue to control the flow of the game but were caught on the counter attack by King’s who opened the scoring with a field goal in the 27th minute.

Grammar responded at the beginning of the third quarter with a goal from Form 7 student H. C. Aspinall to level the scores at 1-1.

A positive passage of play down the right-hand channel saw Grammar open up the Kings defence with a field goal scored by Form 7 student E. M. R. O’Carroll at the end of the third quarter to see Grammar going into the last quarter 2-1 up.

Grammar maintained their defensive structure throughout the fourth quarter to keep King’s College at bay. A well-executed corner saw Form 6 student J. B. M. Hair score to take the lead to 3-1 in the 47th minute which was the final result and saw the 1st XI Hockey team retain the Birchell Shield.
