New Zealand Secondary Schools Chess Championships

The New Zealand Secondary Schools Chess Championships were held over the first weekend of the holidays in Christchurch. With 17 schools qualifying to compete at this year’s Nationals, the team of Form 3 student O. S. X. Qin, Form 4 student M. R. Chen, Form 7 student A. R. Coates, and captain A. Z. Wang represented the School well, and in doing so came in third place to receive the Bronze medal.17 schools qualified to compete at this year’s Nationals.

The team had wins over St Andrew’s College, Macleans College, King’s College, Hamilton Boys’ High School, and Havelock North High School. Their two losses were against Rangitoto College and Wellington College who
finished the tournament first and second respectively.

Of note, M. R. Chen scored 6.5 out of 7 to win the gold medal for Best Performance on board 4 at the tournament, and crossed stage along with captain A. Z. Wang to receive their medals.
