Auckland Athletics Championships (Day 3)

The third and final day of the Auckland Athletics Championships took place on Tuesday 22 March at Mount Smart Stadium. Conditions were reasonable, with some strong headwinds throughout the day that slowed the pace of some races, but the team of athletes from Auckland Grammar School secured three gold, one silver, and seven bronze medals.

Form 6 student Q. R. Gardiner-Hall opened the day by comfortably winning the 3000m walk. In the hurdlers, Form 3 student J. T. Braun and Form 4 student J. B. Chandra secured silver and bronze in the junior grade, followed by Form 7 student C. H. Davidson with bronze in the senior event.

The second gold medal of the day was won by Form 5 student J. A. Thomson in the intermediate 100m with a superb time of 11.53s, a feat which would have theoretically won him the gold in the senior grade as well.

In the 1500m, Form 3 student L. C. R. Thomson secured third in the junior 300m before more medals were won in the last events of the day – the jumps. Form 3 student N. J. Stanley was third in both the junior high jump and long jump, and another two bronze medals were won by Chandra in the junior triple jump and Form 6 student H. J. Waldegrave in the intermediate triple jump. It was the junior triple jump that saw the day’s last gold medal won by Form 3 student B. M. Armstrong in the junior grade with a distance of 11.07m.

Congratulations to all the athletes who competed as representatives of Auckland Grammar School over the three days of the Auckland Championships. Special thanks again to Master in Charge of Athletics Mr Nico Leiseder, and Mr Stuart Blackwell, Mr Chris Oates, and Mr Josh Potaka who helped with the organisation of the championship days.
