The school Yachting team sails in a number of regattas. Usually the first is the Harken Schools Regatta. This is sailed in small keel boats that are used by the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron to train many of New Zealand's best keelboat sailors. This year we won the event.
The team then competes in the Auckland Secondary Schools Fleet Racing Regatta. This is sailed at Wakatere Yacht club situated at Narrow Neck Beach. The regatta is for all sailing classes generally sailed with clubs in Auckland. Schools win the regatta by taking the finishing places of 4 yachts sailed in 3 different classes. This year we came second.
The major emphasis in schools yachting is on teams racing. Three 420 class yachts from a school race against 3 yachts from another school. The team with the least number of finishing points wins.
Generally there is a Regional Regatta followed by the National Secondary Schools Champs. We usually sail against schools south of the bridge. This year we sailed very well to win all 17 of our races against 9 other teams.
This is followed by the National Teams Racing Regatta which is sailed in the last week of the term 1 holiday. The thirty schools that take part are seeded into Gold, Silver and Bronze fleets.
We were in the Gold fleet based on our record in past regattas. The event is sailed as 3 round robins with increasing points for each one. This year we won.
