The Auckland Grammar School Endurance Swimming Team is a subset of the school's Swimming Team. They compete in long, open water swims which test not only their endurance, but the swimmers' capacity for coldness.
Endurance Swimming Achievements
In 2015, the squad set a new world record earlier this year swimming one of the toughest channels of open water - the Catalina Channel in Southern California, USA.
The new world record of 8 hours, 45 minutes, 38 seconds, is the fastest time for the Under-20 male relay team swimming the 32.3 kilometre route (between Catalina Island and the mainland in Southern California at the shortest distance).
The previous Master in Charge of Endurance Swimming, Mr Graham Beaumont, was fortunate enough to go on the swim with the students - Hamish Waddell, Burhanuddin Haidermota, Oliver Wooles, William Ashworth, Jack Anderson, Angus Falconer and alternate, Carlos Aguilera Cortes.
On the days leading up to the swim, he had been keeping an eye on the 24 hour marine forecast (which wasn't favourable), as Tropical Storm Dolores was moving up the west coast from Mexico. Because of this, the swim was to start at the usual finish point of Terranea Cove and then wind back to Doctor's Cove on Santa Catalina Island.
Regulations state that each team needed to have six 6 members, each swimming in one-hour intervals, as hard as they possibly could. The squad swam through the night, finishing just after sunrise. While in the water, they experienced a variety of different marine life including sea lions, whales and jelly fish - but thankfully, no great white sharks!
While several New Zealanders have made this crossing solo, Auckland Grammar School is the first relay team in the country to cross the channel. Click here to view a gallery of photos of the record-breaking swim.
