During Term 1, members of the Environmental Group, led by Mathematics master Ms Annette van Heerden, participated in an animal monitoring workshop.
They installed tracking tunnels and chew cards around the School campus to find out what animals are living in our School grounds. This activity was run by community conservation project Urban Ark - Manawa Taiao and is being supported by Auckland Council's Sustainable Schools team.
During Term 2, the group took part in a workshop on predator trapping to help enhance native biodiversity in the school and contribute to the wider Maungawhau Ecological Halo project.
The group are using Good Nature traps that were bought as part of a grant from Auckland Council for Maungawhau Ecological Restoration as well as traps that were donated by Urban Ark. The traps were set where the tracking tunnels indicated the presence of predators, mainly rats, and to date six rats have been captured.
