Sportsman of the Year is awarded to the student who is the highest performing sportsman in a single code.
The 2020 recipient is: L.A Fatialofa
Leo Fatialofa has demonstrated sporting prowess and earned national recognition in the sport of Squash this year.
He has been a member of the Premier Squash Team for 3 years and this year was Captain of the Premier Team. Fortunately, the New Zealand Secondary School Championships were able to be played and he was instrumental in helping the team earn Bronze.
Leo was selected for the New Zealand Junior Men’s Team who were scheduled to compete at the Junior World Championships, but due to the global pandemic were cancelled. He was also granted a wild card entry into the PSA Challenger Tour in Auckland where he played against professional squash players losing in the first round.
Leo was selected to play in the Men’s Premier League competing against Lance Beddoes who at 27 years of age is a two-time Commonwealth Games player, previously ranked in the top 100 best players in the world. Leo took the encounter to the fifth game (2 all) eventually winning 13-11.
Leo has a current world ranking of 375 with a full school timetable and his commitment to school sport. He has the ability, mindset and self-discipline to better this in the coming years.
Leo was awarded a Squash Colour in 2018, 2019 and 2020. He also won the College Sport Young Sportsman of the Year Award for Squash in 2019.
This year, in an interrupted sporting season, Leo has remained dedicated to the sport and achieved at the highest of level within the region and country.
