2020 Hal Radford Memorial Trophy: D.H Gong

This trophy is awarded to the young man who by quality of performance and all-round effort has also contributed to the administration of a sporting code.

This award is given to a young man involved in a sport that is not necessarily considered a mainstream code.

The 2020 recipient is: D.H Gong 7A

Daniel has been Captain of the Premier Chess Team for 4 years.  He has assisted Mr Moore, the Master in Charge of Chess in the administration of this sport, playing a pivotal role behind the scenes, ensuring every player is well-informed and prepares with purpose. He has provided valuable guidance to the ongoing development of the Premier Team, ensuring the team is ready to compete at the highest level.

Alongside his student leadership and administration of the sport Daniel led the Premier team to win the New Zealand Secondary Schools Championship this year playing as the No. 1 seed where he has been unbeaten in all secondary school competitions in 2020. Under Daniel’s leadership the Premier Team has won 2 national titles in the past 4 years. He is a recipient of Colours in Chess in 2018, 2019 and 2020. It should also be noted that Daniel is ranked as a Federation Master and over the last 3 years has represented the New Zealand Open Team at the World Chess Olympiad.

Daniel has also maintained his academic studies as a member of 7A. He has been a personable, diligent young man who has upheld the School’s values. He has been equally dedicated to his sporting endeavours and academic success while demonstrating an excellent school spirit.

Daniel Gong has taken great pride in representing the School, he has had significant success at the highest level in his sport, while managing his time to help inspire and mentor other students, thereby growing the game at Auckland Grammar School.
