The 2020 Performing Arts Excellence award is A.J.A. Raby 7G.
This is awarded to the student who, by quality of performance and all-round effort, has contributed and excelled most in his given Performing Arts activity.
Raby is the Leader of the Big Band and Jazz Combo. He is also a member of the Concert Band, Grammar Voices, Grammarphonics, and has contributed to Chamber Music and the Weird and Wonderful Orchestra. Outside of Music Raby has been a 2020 Prefect and member the Young Enterprise Group ‘One Cut’.
Raby has contributed as a member of the Big Band and the Jazz Programme for 5 years. In his final year he has been the Band’s Leader.
He excels on the Tenor Saxophone and this year has led the Jazz Combo in developing a new sound, new material and has sustained the high level of excellence within this group.
As a member of the Big Band, he has excelled as the Band earned Silver at the National Jazz Festival in 2017 and Gold in 2018 and 2019.
In 2018 and 2019 this group also achieved Gold at the Auckland Secondary School Jazz Competition. In 2019 this band also recorded the full-length album, Thing of Gold.
Individually Raby has also been selected as a member of the Auckland Secondary Schools Big Band in 2018 and 2019. As was a finalist in the Senior Minister’s Plate competition.
In 2021 Raby will be studying at the New Zealand School of Music as he pursues a degree in Music Majoring in Jazz Performance.
