2019 Sportsman of the Year: Prefect O. J. White

The Sportsman of the Year is awarded to the student who is the highest performing sportsman in a single code and the 2019 recipient is Prefect O. J. White.

Ollie White is an able and talented sportsman who has earned national recognition in cricket this year.

He has been a member of the 1st XI Cricket Team for four years and this year was named Captain of Cricket.

Ollie played debuted for the 1st XI in Term 4 of his first year at Auckland Grammar. In Form 4, he was capped after playing seven games for the team in Auckland and Inter-School fixtures. This is rare in the School's history, but it was earned and the challenge was readily accepted.

Ollie has continued the trend of accepting challenges through sport and in 2019 he has had a stellar year. He is the current captain of the 1st XI where he has led from the front as a true all-rounder who has excelled in all three components of the game.

Ollie has scored five centuries for the 1st XI, with countless other innings where he was the main provider of runs. His best bowling figures for the 1st XI are 7 for 24 and again there were a series of games where he influenced the number of runs conceded whilst other bowlers took the wickets. In the field, Ollie is quick across the ground. His ability to anticipate and react under pressure whilst maintaining a safe pair of hands has been a real asset. It should also be noted in terms of all-round athleticism, Ollie played rugby for the 1st XV at fullback in 2018, thus reinforcing his all-round ability as an athlete.

In 2019 Ollie was selected for and captained the Northern Districts Under 19 Team, and the New Zealand Maori Secondary Schools team (scoring 117 against the Senior Men's Governor Generals XI). He is also the current New Zealand Under 19 Captain playing games against Australia and Bangladesh.

There is little doubt that as a schoolboy Ollie is one of the brightest cricketing talents in the country this year. This has also been identified by selectors as he has played games for the Northland Senior Men's Team, Northern Districts A Senior Men's and he was selected as 12th man for the New Zealand A Team.

Ollie was awarded a Cricket Colour in 2018 and again in 2019 and won the Young Sportsman of the Year award for Cricket in 2019.

This year Ollie's dedication to the sport has seen him continue to develop as a cricketer. This mindset has enabled him to achieve the highest of standards and experience national and international successes.
