Eight Auckland Grammar teams competed in the Rugby Grade finals on Saturday. The 2nd XV started finals day off well for the School with a win over Kelston Boys' High School. However the 3rd XV lost against a strong Sacred Heart College side.
The 5A side dominated King's College to win their championship, while 5B overcame Botany Downs High School to win the plate. 6A lost narrowly to Sacred Heart College in a high quality game that either side could have won and 6B had a similar experience, losing out to Pukekohe High School.
In the final round of games, 1R played Sacred Heart College. A scoreless second half showed that they were competitive, but they paid the price for a slow start.
7A also played Sacred Heart College that had been dominant all season, but, in perhaps the performance of the day, they fought to a 3-0 lead and without either territory or possession, they tackled like tigers to hold on for a gutsy victory.
In summary, of Grammar's 16 rugby teams, 10 - including all our A teams - made semi-finals, eight made the finals and four sides won championships.
The School will formally congratulate the 2A, 5A and 7A teams when their captains cross stage next week to receive their trophies.
