Student Achievements - November 2017
Orienteering: Michael McCormack 5C was selected for the New Zealand Secondary Schools Orienteering team that competed in Australia. Overall, New Zealand beat Australia to reclaim the Southern Cross Trophy.
Rugby: Elijah Maruariki-Wiki 4O has been selected to play for New Zealand Under 16 Tag20 Rugby representative team to compete at the Tag20 Rugby Oceania Cup in Melbourne. Teams from across the world have been invited including Australia, Samoa, Tonga, Niue, Cook Islands and New Zealand Maori.
Sailing: Henry McLachlan 4J recently competed for the Royal Auckland Yacht Club in the China Cup Regatta where he skippered a Far East (keeler) with a crew of 4 to victory. Prior to this, Henry had only sailed solo or two handed.
Squash: Elijah Thomas 4C has had some notable achievements over the last few weeks. He was the runner-up in the Under 15 national individual final in Christchurch and a member of the Auckland Under 19 team that won the national teams event in Christchurch.
Elijas was also the runner-up in the National B Grade Team Superchamps in Cromwell, the National Champion as the winner of the B Grade Champion of Champion title in Ohakune and has been selected for the NZ Under 17 two-man team to compete with other age group players against Australia during the summer holidays.
Skiing: Jay Sherlock 5E competed in the North Island Secondary Schools Skiing competition held at Turoa and was first in the Junior Men's category.
Surf Life Saving: Oscar Williams 7C competed at the New Zealand Surflifesaving Pool Championships in October, where he won gold medals in three individual events (the Under 19 Men's 100m manikin carry with fins, the Under 19 Men's rescue 50m medley and the Under 19 Men's 200m superlifesaver), silver in the Under 19 Men's 100 manikin carry, and bronze in the Under 19 Men's 100m manikin tow with fins, breaking his own New Zealand record in the process.
He also won gold in the following team events - the Under 19 Men's line throw, the Under 19 Men's manikin relay (with a NZ record time) and the Under 19 Men's rescue medley relay (with a NZ record time).
Oscar has been selected to represent New Zealand in the Junior Black Fins team competing in the Ironman, Surf Ski and Tube Rescue events at the International Surf Rescue Challenge at Mt Maunganui in a three test series against Australia, South Africa, Great Britain, France and the USA.
Jack Dufaur 5D was also a member of the team that won Gold at the National Pool Championships in the Under 19 Men's rescue medley relay (NZ record time).
Weightlifting: Benet Kumeroa 6E1 recently attended the Weightlifting National Championships in Dunedin. Benet has broken over 40 New Zealand records since he started and almost 20 records for this season which ends in December, including the Snatch and Clean and Jerk. At the recent Open Nationals, he won gold at the Junior Under 20 105+kg category and bronze in the Senior Men's 105+kg category.
