Tibbs House was opened in 1962 with 46 boys to provide an opportunity for boys outside of the greater Auckland area to attend Auckland Grammar School.

It was named after the fourth Headmaster of Auckland Grammar School, Mr J W Tibbs MA, CMG, who was Headmaster from 1893 to 1922. A statue of Mr Tibbs can be found at the entrance to Old Tibbs House.

Since 1962, many hostel boys have had access to the fine quality education provided by Auckland Grammar School.The cornerstone of Tibbs House is the requirement of all boys to do Prep. Prep is what most people call homework or study but we call it Prep because it means just that: it prepares boys for their lessons the next day.

The House is provided with excellent facilities by the School. It is not funded by the School nor the Government so the fees you pay for your son to board at Tibbs are the actual cost of running the House. The facilities were expanded and improved during 1991/1992 and again in 1998. These facilities are now the equal of any other boarding institution. Boys have comfortable rooms with no more than five to a room at junior level and fewer at senior level. Good food is provided every day by our contract caterers, Eurest. Recreational facilities are good but are an area we are looking to expand in the near future.

Tibbs House 50th Reunion - July 2012

Tibbs House hostel will be celebrating its 50th Anniversary in 2012.

Planning is well underway to commend this significant event in Auckland Grammar School’s history. Taking place at Auckland Grammar School 20-21 July 2012, Tibbs House Old Boys and current and former staff, current families and supporters are all welcome.
