Premier Waterpolo - Auckland Secondary School Champions

Friday 8 April 2011

FINAL SCORE: AGS 7   SACRED HEART 5

Scorers: J Hemus (5), Thomas McLean (1), Paul Richardson (1)

On Friday 8 April the Premier waterpolo team played in the Auckland Championship final. Throughout pool play and playoff’s Sacred Heart had gone undefeated and were also crowned North Island champions a few weeks previously. They therefore went into the game as hot favourites. The game was played in front of a large crowd which saw the Dio aquatic centre over crowded with supporters filling every available space.

The game started with a lot of tension and nerves from both teams and after 2 minutes into the first quarter there was still no score from either side. Sacred finally opened the scoring through a well taken 5 metre from danger man Matt Lewis. Grammar hit back almost immediately when man of the match Jeff Hemus scored his first of 5 goals for the night through a well directed outside shot. Late in the first quarter Hemus put the ball in the back of the net again from a well timed cross pass by Richardson. That took the score to 2-1 at the end of the first quarter.

The beginning of the second quarter saw Richardson win the vital swim off which resulted in a 5 metre penalty after Sacred Heart still had 7 players in the field which Hemus held his nerve for and slotted calmly.

The very next offence Sacred Heart hit back immediately with them scoring after a well worked offence. After a slight lull in intensity Grammar lifted again and Thomas Maclean showed exceptional ball skill when he found the back of the net after a dodgy jungle ball pass from Richardson. Grammar then started to dominate proceedings after Hemus ripped in another well directed outside shot and also Kermode earned himself a well deserved 5 metre penalty which Hemus stepped up again and slotted with precision. This gave Grammar a 6-2 lead at half time.

Sacred Heart were then forced to play catch up throughout the entire second half which they clearly were not used to doing, throwing the ball away on numerous occasions. Although Grammar worked some very good offences they struggled to find the back of the net in the second half however after another goal from Sacred Heart, Grammar hit back with a cheeky outside shot which found the back of the net from Richardson.

The last quarter saw Grammar play very smart waterpolo by simply chewing up the clock forcing Sacred to take low percentage shots from the outside. Sacred managed to score two goals in the last quarter. However it was never enough and Grammar won the championship 7-5.

Special mention must go to P Hargraves who made numerous vital steals out top throughout the game. Also some outstanding defence from Callum Morrison on the big Sacred centre forward helped mark him out of the game. Paul Richardson and Lachie Kermode saw the dangerous Matt Lewis ejected from the game before half-time. Harry Allen once again was outstanding with some great saves in goal.

Premier Waterpolo - Auckland Championship

March 2011

On the weekend the Premier water polo team had two very important wins securing them a spot in a semi-final for the Auckland competition.

On Friday night they played a determined Kings side where Grammar started out strongly scoring 3 goals in the first 3 offences. The team then had a disappointing lull mid-way through the game but came out in the last quarter and the sealed the game comfortably winning 10-6 final score.

On Sunday night the premier team had a very pleasing and crucial win verses Rangitoto. After a reasonably slow start Grammar was down 4-1 at the end of the first quarter however by half-time they had managed to claw there way back into the game with the scores level at 5-5. The third quarter saw Grammar continue their dominance on defense and also add two more goals to the tally. There was only one more goal scored in the final quarter for both teams coming from a well directed outside shot by Jeff Hemus who had an outstanding game finishing up with four goals for the night.

This means Grammar will come up against Westlake in their semi-final clash this weekend.

The team would like to thank the great Grammar support they had on Friday night verses Kings College. It was very much appreciated.
