Auckland Secondary Schools' Finals

Saturday 31 October 2009

The Auckland Secondary Schools Finals were held on Saturday in gloriously fine weather. Grammar had 3 teams playing: The Intermediate A1 scored an exciting victory over Kings 7-2 although several of the matches were very close. Captain, R Zhang and P Girdhar at 1 and 2 had excellent matches against opponents who had beaten them earlier in the season, both winning 6-3.

The Junior A1 won their final 8-1 to cap off what has been a totally dominant year. In fact, the match lost in the final was the only set dropped in 63 sets this year. The no 1 singles match was reasonably close although D Jiang’s power proved too much in the end for Kings.

The Junior A2 was playing against Westlake in the ¾ playoffs and the players were keen to show that they should have been in the final after losing to Kings in the semis by the narrowest of margins. It was very close but S Shuker came through in the no 3 singles 7-5 to give Grammar a 5-4 win and underlined the strength of junior tennis at Grammar.
