The Grammar No 1 Table Tennis team of B Zhu, MCM Ho and P X Xiao competed in the New Zealand Schools' Championship in Christchurch during the holidays. There were some very strong players from both North Island and South Island schools and it was clear from the outset that this would not be an easy contest. The format began with a round-robin in four groups. Grammar won their group play and then faced off against the other three section winners, including Nayland College, Christchurch and MacLeans College.
The final playoff for gold and silver was Grammar against MacLeans. MacLeans has narrowly beaten Grammar in the Auckland Schools competition and they again showed their strength by winning the first two singles. They only needed one more game to take the tournament. However Zhu and Xiao outclassed their opponents, levelling the score at 2-all. The National title was now down to the final doubles. Here Zhu and Ho combined well with Zhu serving strongly and Ho smashing excellent forehand return shots. They proved too strong winning easily by 11-5, 11-5, 11-6. The final result - Grammar 3 and MacLeans 2. This is the second consecutive time that Grammar have won the National Schools Table Tennis title.
Zhu and Xiao then went on to compete in the New Zealand Open, winning an unprecedented 7 National titles between them, including the under 15, under 17 and under 19 boys singles. This is a remarkable achievement.
