AGS National Champions 2008 for 6th Consecutive Year

The National Secondary Schools' Squash Championship held over four days in September hosted 42 teams in the boys' section and another 19 in a separate girls' section.

The Grammar Premier 1 team played Fielding High School in the 1st round and easily dispatched them 5 - 0. In the 2nd and 3rd rounds the team recorded relatively comfortable 5 - 0 wins over Francis Douglas 1 and Hamilton Boys' High School.

Grammar played Whangarei Boys' High School in the semis. This match proved to be much tougher than the previous two with Grammar conceding their first game of the tournament but eventually going on to win 5 - 0.

This resulted in a final against Christchurch Boys' High School. First on court was Curtis Harrison. He gave the team a great start by blitzing his opponent three games to love. Next was Grammar captain, Nathan Gunn. He also played a great match to comprehensively defeat his opponent three games to love.

The 3rd match featured Grammar No 1 Cameron Jamieson. His opponent was also an A Grade squash player which is an elite grading for any school boy. In what would prove to be the match of the tournament, Jamieson lost the first game but went on to win the next three in a marvellous display of patient and accurate squash; combining deft touches of rare skill with great power and control.

Having won the first three of five matches, the National Title was secured. The 4th and 5th matches featuring Vlad Stoyanov and Preshin Manmindar were both won thus completing a 5 - 0 clean sweep of Christchurch Boys' High School.

Boys who received a winners' medal and rep badge were:

Peter Eszes - playing at No 5 for the team, Eszes has improved greatly over the last year and has deservedly cemented his place in the team.

Vlad Stoyanov - playing at either No 4 or 5, Stoyanov progressed through the tournanent without conceding a single game. His endurance on a squash court is the stuff of legend; he simply ran his opponents into the ground.

Curtis Harrison - playing at either No 3 or 4, Harrison combines tremendous natural athleticism with real flair and panache. He has the ability to become an A grade player and join the ranks of the elite, and is a great team man.

Preshin Manmindar - playing at either No 1 or 2, Manminder is one of the most skilful squash players to play for Grammar being a rep badge holder 2007 and 2008. He was named in the NZ Secondary Schools' Tournament team - one of the six best players at the tournament.

Cameron Jamieson - is the Grammar No 1, has a current Open Men's ranking of 8th in New Zealand and was named as the top player at the tournament.

Cameron first went to National Tournament while in Form 3 and has attended every one since then. This year he competed in the world junior men's in Switzerland. Cool under pressure, he is a marvellous athlete and one of the best squash players to ever pass through the School. Rep badge holder 2007, 2008

Nathan Gunn the Captain of Squash.
An extremely fit and agile player with an elite grading of B1. He has led a team who are Auckland Champions, Regional Champions and now National Champions for a remarkable 6th consecutive time! His team won every match at Nationals, conceding only three games in 60; an extraordinary statistic. This team is probably the finest squash team to ever represent Auckland Grammar School.
