Auckland Secondary Schools Rugby Finals Day

27 Aug 2011

This year Grammar entered 17 teams, with 5 of these competing within their respective finals which was a tribute to both the players and coaches associated with all these sides. Out of the 5 Grammar finalists 2 teams were successful.

After highly impressive seasons the 2nd XV and 3rd XV sides came up against Mount Albert Grammar and Otahuhu College respectively in their final games. Unfortunately the 2nd XV started very slowly and were never able to recover, eventually going down 27-11. The 3rd XV were well and truly in their match before the Otahuhu College 2nd XV side pulled away in the last 10 minutes to run out eventual winners 25-15. In a real upset 7B who had been the form team of their competition didn't take their opportunities after conceding early points, resulting in a 17-5 loss to St Peters College.

Success for the Grammar teams began with an outstanding performance by the 6A side, who coached by Mr Oates, won a very close and intense game. The 6A team dominated field position for long periods, thanks to Papa's accurate long range kicks and due to the forwards' domination of the breakdown. The backs attacked with pace and ran very good lines, but Sacred Heart's defence was resolute. Eventually real nerve, determination and constant pressure on Sacred Heart in the tightest of environments saw the Grammar team claim the championship 9-8.

Playing on the field alongside 6A, Mr Skeen's 5A team produced an excellent end to the season turning the halftime margin of 3-3 into a comprehensive second half performance which took the score out to 23-3 at the final whistle. The 5A team once again illustrated their superb attacking rugby this time against the Sacred Heart team on their own track. The team culture which has been evident all season showed through as they secured their championship title to cap off an undefeated season.

For both 6A and 5A the 2011 season was a redemption of sorts considering many players in both teams had lost their respective 2010 finals to Sacred Heart teams.

The captains crossed stage on Wednesday 7 September to receive the school's congratulations:

6A- Andrew Jackson
5A- Jordan Hurinui

The Auckland Grammar School Rugby Club wishing to thank all of the Grammar students and Masters who have played, coached, managed and supported Grammar Rugby in 2011. We look forward to more championship titles in 2012.
