Hockey at Auckland Grammar

Auckland Grammar has a long and valued tradition both in Academia and in Sports. Hockey at Auckland Grammar holds its own within the myriad of Winter Sports that are on offer and continually produce winning teams at all grades along with Auckland Representative Players at all age groups. The school has been fortunate to have players several New Zealand Representatives including recent players Ryan Archibald, Hamish Barron and Shay Neal.

Auckland Grammar School 1st XI Hockey team has been very successful over a number of years having won the Premier Secondary Schools Tournament (Rankin Cup) on more than 20 occasions including 5 titles since 2000. Currently the school fields eight Hockey Teams in the local Auckland Secondary Competition with all grades playing on a Monday, Wednesday or Friday evening. As well as these competitions the school has regular exchanges and sends senior teams to National Tournaments. Each team is gratefully guided by a teacher and some Under 15 teams are also assisted by players from the 1st XI.

With financial demands placed on the school and on parents, we endeavour to minimise the impact of registration fees each year and currently these are at $50 per player. This cost helps to cover the entry of the teams and usage of artificial facilities. Hockey is fortunate to have been assisted by several companies to help lessen the financial burden that is ever increasing and without these companies the school would not be able to provide the facilities or the opportunities that currently exist. These companies include FujiXerox who are the principle naming rights sponsor of the facility, Sports Technology International (STI) who through their brand Poligras, upgraded the playing surface in 2010 and are the main sponsors of Hockey at the school, Grammar Electrical and Functional Physio who are sponsors of the 1st XI and Shoe Science and Loaded Sports Drink who assist with product throughout the year.

Hockey at Auckland Grammar School is constantly trying to improve and all players have high expectations placed on them in both the sporting arena and also in the classroom. With these expectations of a competitive nature there is also the element of enjoyment with social as well as serious teams entered into the mid-week competition.
