During the Term 2 holidays, five Grammar fencers attended the National Secondary Schools Individual Foil Championships in which three of the four semi finalists were from Grammar. Grammar’s two most senior fencers, C Lear and W Schmidt, met in the semi finals; Lear narrowly winning 14-15, and went on to win the final 10-9 at the end of the third fencing period. H Chan and W Schmidt were both placed 3rd =, allowing for the entire Grammar A Team to be selected to represent the North Island in the North Island versus South Island Team match, which they won with the final score at 37-36.

C Lear and H Chan also represented New Zealand at the National Australian Under 17 Championships, held a week earlier in Sydney. Lear overcame his original ranking of 50th after the first round to beat the 15th seeded fencer from Wellington, but was then dropped from 15th to 32nd after his appeal to the DT over the last hit of his next match was wrongfully overruled. Chan performed well in the first round to be placed 22nd and then easily beat 11th seed in his third round match, but lost his next match 12-13 and was placed 16th overall. Chan was selected to represent New Zealand in the Teams event, the team made it to the finals, losing the match to New South Wales.
