Auckland Welcomes International Students of 2012 to Auckland

Auckland Grammar School's 2012 International Students after the Auckland City welcome to International Students held on 21 March 2012 in the Auckland Town Hall. The boys were welcomed by the Deputy Mayor and enjoyed many performances. Two of the Grammar boys won spot prizes: Killian Gewiss from Germany won a surfing trip and Junyang Wang from China won the Skywalk on top of the Sky tower.

History of the School

In 1850, the Governor of New Zealand Sir George Grey made a series of land grants to set up and maintain a grammar school in Auckland. It took another 19 years before a school was opened in Princes Street with just 68 boys. There were to be several more moves before the century was out.

For economic reasons during the depression of the 1880s, girls from the Girls’ High School were taken into Auckland College and Grammar School as it was then known. The name Auckland Grammar School was re-established in 1899 but the School remained coeducational until 1909.

The School’s current Mountain Road site was acquired between 1911 and 1913. Despite the intervening war years the School embarked upon an ambitious and far-sighted building programme, most notably the Spanish Mission-style main building. This building is one of the few examples of its type in Australasia and as such is listed with the New Zealand Historic Places Trust.

During both World Wars Auckland Grammar School

Boys left for military training. Many went on to fight and 631 lost their lives. The imposing War Memorial with its high central column and bronze figure of a youth, was unveiled in 1922.

During the later part of the twentieth century many specialist facilities were built to accommodate a burgeoning roll, which today stands at around 2500 boys.

History and tradition are important parts of the Auckland Grammar school experience and are regularly celebrated throughout the School year.

Facilities

Sport is an important part of School life. AGS processes excellent sports facilities with 6 grass pitches, a water-based artificial turf for hockey, a new indoor sports centre (2006), squash courts, 3 pavilions, an existing gymnasium, heated swimming pool, a new practise turf for various sporting codes, 2 well prepared wickets for our senior cricket teams and 6 artificial turf tennis courts, all of which are located on the school site. Tibbs House is home to 120 boarders. It is located in Clive Road adjoining the School.

The School owns an outdoor education centre – Venture lodge. Located in Ohakune in the central North Island, the lodge is the focus of the School’s extensive outdoor education programme. Venture lodge is set on 4.2 hectares of land and offers students opportunities for bush walking, skiing, canoeing, rock climbing and tramping.

Information Technology (IT) equipment has a major role within the academic and administrative functions of the School. It is essential that students develop adaptability with IT equipment as IT literacy is a primary goal. There is a high level of student access to IT equipment throughout the School in computer laboratories and in key facilities such as the library, the new technology block and the multimedia theatre. In addition there is a consistent focus on staff training to maximise the effectiveness of IT as a learning tool.
