Seung Hyuk started his secondary school career at Grammar in January 2002 and he achieved successes in the academic, as well as in the sporting and cultural areas of the school.

He was in the A stream at school, achieving marks in the 90s for Maths and the Sciences in his senior years. His academic career culminated in the award of an ASB Bursary for Academic Excellence in 2006. Apart from his achievements in Maths and the sciences, his other area of expertise was in the art world. He exhibited some of his work at the Auckland Grammar School Art Exhibition; he painted the set for the school production and he painted the front cover design for the school magazine. He was also recognised by the Konica Minolta Secondary Art awards in his final year.

He managed to balance his academic endeavours by pursuing both sporting and cultural interests on a co-curricular basis. His Football career began in 2004 when he played for the 15A1 team at Grammar and he graduated to the Third XI for his final years at school.

Culturally, he was even more active. He attended Leadership camp in Sixth Form and was a leader at fourth form camps in his seventh form year. He was an active member of the Headmaster’s Cultural Committee and in that capacity had to organise various cultural events at school. He was also involved in various music competitions such as Rockquest and the Battle of the Bands.

Understandably, after all this activity for the school, Seung Hyuk was appointed a prefect in his final year. He graduated from Grammar after a career of which he can be justifiably proud.

In 2007 he headed across the ditch to pursue his academic studies at the University of Melbourne, where he is currently in his third year, studying for a Bachelor of Academic Studies. Here, he has been equally involved. He was a volunteer intern on the University of Melbourne English Language Cultural Programme and he joined the Speaker Series Committee, where he was responsible for promoting and organising weekly public lectures. As well as this, Seung Hyuk has participated in Superstudio 08, SLego 08 (where he received an honourable mention), is a University of Melbourne Representative on the Students Organised Network for Architects and is a current Australian Institute of Architects (Victorian Chapter) councillor.

His university career is undoubtedly as busy, as full, as successful and as rewarding as the life he carved for himself at high school. Go, Seung Hyuk, long may it continue.

Michael Wen-Cheng Tseng

Michael Tseng, International Student from Taiwan started his high school career at Auckland Grammar in 2004. He was in class 3M; from there he worked very hard and progressed to 4I, 5E, 6C and finally 7B. Michael says thanks to the school ranking system he made friends with many people jumping from one class to another, something that he truly treasures.

Outside his vigorous academic life, Michael participated in a wide range of extra-curricular activities, an opportunity he would not have been granted if he were to complete his secondary study in Taiwan. In sport he has been a member of table-tennis for five years, advancing from grade C in third form to higher grade B in his senior years. He has a great interest in Pool and entered the Newmarket tournament in fifth form. Also in fifth form he started playing baseball, regarded as the national sport of Taiwan.

Michael was part of the School's Asian Cultural Group and participated extensively in the Chinese Chess division. He also took part in Community Services organised by Auckland Grammar such as Rest-Home visits and fund-raising for the Forty Hour Famine.

Michael left our school a Grammar Man with his name proudly displayed on our Scholars Board. He is currently doing a bachelor of Science-Biomedical Science degree at the University of Auckland achieving high results and scoring the top mark in one of his papers. He is part of the University Tzu Chi Club, the Taiwanese Buddhism Society.

We look forward to keeping in touch with Michael, reading about his successes in life and we know he will be a fine contributor and member of our society!
