A Brave Man
Mr Morris received this letter 3/8/11 from Dr Lawrence Hogben DSC ’29, Prefect and University Entrance Scholar 1933, Rhodes Scholar 1937.
Dear Headmaster
I wanted to tell you how much I appreciate your series of leading articles in ‘Ad Augusta’ – they give me a good feeling. You may somehow wonder about your old pupils. Well – as top graduate mathematician of all NZ universities and a Rhodes Scholar, I went to New College Oxford for a year.
Then war broke out, so I left and by October I was a naval officer. After over three years at sea I was, in battle, awarded the first DSC ever given to a Royal Navy Instructor Officer. Later, from the Admiralty, I became one (the only New Zealander) of Eisenhower’s six controlling D-Day weather forecasters. Against his will, we stopped his proposed invasion on the disastrously stormy 5 June 1944 and gave the go ahead for the successful 6th.
After the navy, I took a doctorate at the Imperial College London and joined ICI. I served internationally for 30 years ending as Head of Europe on public relations in Brussels, later retiring to France.
Best wishes to you, your staff and the boys at Grammar.
Lawrence Hogben (95 years old)
