Overview of Examination Results 2011

Results have only recently been received from both NZQA and CIE and senior staff are still analysing these but a few general comments are possible. NZ Scholarship examination results will not be made available to schools until the middle of February.

NCEA

The number of boys sitting NCEA has been declining each year. In 2011 there was only a small number who attempted NCEA Level 1 in a limited number of subjects as the entire Form 5 cohort entered for CIE examinations.

At Level 2 there was a 75 percent pass rate which is very pleasing and at Level 3, 64 percent gained a Certificate.

Numeracy and Literacy rates gained from NCEA are still being worked out but of all the boys who sat NCEA, 65 percent gained University Entrance.

CIE

IGCSE (Form 5): It is difficult to compare IGCSE results with the previous year as up until 2011 only boys in the 5A to 5H band sat CIE. Last year the entire cohort from 5A through to 5R sat CIE. Given this broader range of ability the School was very pleased with the results gained. Twenty six percent of all grades were A* (over 90 percent) and a further 22 percent were awarded A grades (80 – 89 percent). Overall 83 percent of all grades were graded A* to C which is an excellent achievement.

AS (Form 6/7): AS results also showed an excellent standard. 30 percent of papers sat were awarded A Grades and especially pleasing was the low number of ungraded papers. Overall 66 percent of papers were graded A to C.

A Level (Form 7): Students again performed with distinction and 87 percent of all grades were graded C (60 percent +) or better with 48 percent graded A* or A. These results represent our best ever return and reflects very favourably on the teaching of the subjects and also the work ethic and ability of the students.

Overall Grammar students achieved 26 Top Scholar awards. This is more than any other school in New Zealand that entered students in CIE and is also our best result ever since we first offered CIE in 2002.
