Music

Music is taught at all levels of the school by four full-time and one part-time Music Masters, as an academic subject within the curriculum. Both NCEA and CIE pathways are offered.

Music is compulsory at Form 3 and 4 level. After this it is optional, leading up to University level study in the areas of performance, composition, aural skills, theory and musical knowledge.

The Music Department also encourages music performance groups. These groups perform regularly and to the very highest standard; culminating in internal and external competitions each year. These groups consist of:

Symphony Orchestra
Grammar Virtuosi
Concert Band
Stage Band
Grammar Voices
Barbershop Quartet
Pipe Band
Chamber Music Ensembles

A total of 11 visiting instrumental music tutors visit the school each week. Subjects include voice, all wind, brass, string and percussion instruments as well as piano, electric guitar, bagpipes and drums.

Every year students excel in academic music and performance studies. Many have gone on to be professional performers, composers and teachers both in New Zealand and overseas.

We are proud to be a versatile and high achieving Music Department.
