Department Structure

The Mathematics Department is divided by form level. Teachers being in charge of particular level have a high degree of autonomy in writing the syllabus, controlling and moderating internal assessment events and making decisions.

Maths Buddy - a computer based video mathematics tutor is being offered to all students. Form 3 students will get FREE access during Term 1. For $25 students can get access to thousands of video tutor lessons, worksheets and practice tests. Parents can get email updates of student's progress.

Homework and Assignments

i) Homework is frequently set. Checks are carried out to ensure that it has been done.
ii) All work is marked either by the master or pupil.
iii) Senior pupils, particularly 7th formers, may be given assignments to prepare them for the style of education they will meet in the tertiary area.

Form 3 & 4 Worksheets

A desk copy of the work sheets issued to all 3rd and 4th formers is kept in the Library. If a student wishes to get a replacement he will be able to photocopy a replacement by handing in his library card. Replacement topic sheets can also be purchased from Mr Rehu in B10.

Tutorials

The Mathematics Department run a tutorial session every Tuesday and Thursday morning in B8. This is an opportunity for all students from every level to seek helpful advice from departmental staff on problems that they may have. These start at 8 am and run through to 8.45 am.

Gifted & Talented Students

Much is done for this group by way of the accelerated programme on which the top two or three classes at Forms 3 - 6 are placed. In addition the Mathematics Department realises the tremendous enrichment provided by the various Mathematics competitions such as the Otago Maths Competition, NZ Senior Mathematics Competition and the Australian Maths Competition. Our pupils are given every encouragement to enter these contests and hundreds of them do. The 'Mathex' Competition is organised by Mr Grover who also selects the teams.

Tests and Examinations

i) Tests are frequently given in order to assess student progress.
ii) Exams are sat by all pupils. The school's exam structure is:

1. End of Term I Progress Exams. These will cover all work completed to date.
Form 3 have a 1.5 hour Exam; Forms 4 -7 have a 1 hour Exam.

2. End of Term II Exam (2 hours for all). These will contain all work covered in Terms I and II.

3. Term III Final Exam - Seniors (3 hours), Term IV Juniors (2 Hours)

iii) Weighting of Internal Exams for Year Aggregate will be:
Progress Exam 15%, Term II Exam 35%, and Final Exam 50%.

The Future

With the introduction of NCEA in 2004 to all levels we have a responsibility to provide a rigorous academic external exam. With the help of the Cambridge exams we can provide a full external exam that is both thought- provoking and challenging and offers students a pathway to obtain an internationally recognised qualification.
