Latin
The Latin Department at Auckand Grammar School is the largest in New Zealand and among the largest in the world. In 2012 there will be approximately 500 students studying Latin in Years 9-13. Six specialist Latin teachers manage the teaching programme.
The Latin curriculum in Years 9-11 prepares students for the study of both Classical Studies and Latin in the senior school. Those students who choose to terminate their study after Year 10 can claim a linguistic legacy which will support their future studies.
The study of Latin is not entirely linguistic. Historical, geographical and sociological aspects are addressed. Formal grammar is rigorously taught which will both enhance the knowledge of English and allow easier access to the learning of European languages.
In Year 11, students take an NCEA enriched course which leads to NCEA Level 2 or AS Latin in Year 12, and then AS Latin in Year 13. Accelerated forms may opt for AS Latin in both Years 12 and/or 13.
The teachers have access to all material from the American Classical League (USA) and the Joint Association of Classical Teachers (UK). At all five levels students are entered in The Auckland Classical Association Latin Reading competitions and the international American Classical League National Latin Exams.
A project display hosted by the School Library has been a highlight for many years. The most original and well-executed projects are awarded ancient Roman coins as prizes.
In addition, the Department organises a Western Heritage trip to study and visit classical art and architecture in Greece, Italy, France and England. The tour, available to Year 12 and 13 students (6th and 7th formers), lasts approximately four weeks and is undertaken every second year.
