Form 6 Leadership Camps

Auckland Grammar School is pleased to again be able to offer an opportunity for sixth form students to gain valuable skills in how to be effective leaders through experiencing challenging situations within an outdoor education context.

As part of our wider Leadership Programmes portfolio there will be three Sixth Form Leadership Camps in 2011 which will primarily operate out of the school’s Venture Lodge in Ohakune:

  • Week 6, Term 1 Monday 27 February to Friday 2 March
  • Week 5, Term 2 Monday 21 May to Friday 25 May
  • Week 2, Term 3 Monday 23 July to Friday 27 July

The camps run for the duration of the week with the students departing early Monday morning and returning early Friday evening. Each camp sees the students work from our base in Ohakune, using the contrasting terrain in and around the Tongariro National Park.

The students lead a number of team activities and scenarios throughout the five day camp. The activities are designed to place students out of their comfort zone, so that they gain a better understanding of their own leadership skills and how team dynamics operate, with a view to developing strong leaders.

The camp programme is constructed by the Master in Charge of Leadership Programmes, in consultation with the professional expertise of the senior staff responsible for the Motutapu Outdoor Education Camp. The students are also accompanied by experienced Auckland Grammar School staff.

During the week the students are provided with feedback that allows them to reflect on their own leadership skills and how these can be incorporated into group situations to create positive team outcomes. The students are then encouraged to act as a 7th Form leaders on the following year’s 4th Form Camps.

Due to the interest that arises from this valuable opportunity each student is always required to complete a written application. The application form is then reviewed by the Sixth Form Dean, the Executive and Master in Charge of Leadership Programmes to determine a list of successful candidates.

Finally, as true leadership requires the ability to be adaptable in the face of unforeseeable obstacles and unfamiliar environments, the itinerary for the week always remains strictly confidential. However, rest assured the week always delivers a non-stop adventure!
